Hot take: it really doesnā€™t matter which you use if a consensus arises that the two are interchangeable.

Many countries have names for themselves that differ from what the rest of the world calls them (see: Germany vs Deutschland for instance). The naming of other countries by different names than they call themselves did not start with colonialism. All the way back to ancient Greek and Roman times, and also ancient China, all of these civilizations had various names for their neighbors and beyond.

This is neither good nor bad, it is just a feature of living in a world with many different languages.

This is extremely bad because BJP is saffronizing India by changing all Islamic monarchs named roads and cities to fascist leaders of 1930s. Changing the official name of India to ā€œbharatā€ Is an anti Dravidian policy because thatā€™s not how South India linked itself to ancient India . I hope people from the Western countries donā€™t endorse any fascist proposition .

Yeah i assumed it was driven by this kind of ethno-religious nationalist motivation. Itā€™s a populist move to score some cheap points with their base. But if the international community decides to just go along with it there is little anyone can do about it. And right now everyone is trying to court India to join their side, the US want to use them against China and China+Russia want them more solidly integrated into BRICS. So humoring them on a symbolic name change is a very low cost way to suck up to the Indian government.

International community didnā€™t do anything when Turkey changed itā€™s name and neither it can do anything if India endorses the name ā€œBharatā€ And erases the name India from its Constitution, neither you could do anything when Christian and Muslim minorities were killed in Manipur and in various regions of India. Being a communist i cannot say I support the cause of BJP And co and neither should anyone be neutral to this. Thats all it matters

In its first article, the constitution of India declares ā€œIndia, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.ā€
