Are there any communities you’ve not yet seen on kbin that you used to visit on Reddit?
Edit: So a lot of people don’t know this, you can search for magazines on kbin here - https://kbin.social/magazines
I miss all my hobby and crafting subreddits lol. Off the top of my head,
Woodworking / Beginners
Sewing / Knitting
Dioramas / Terrain Building
Painting
Survival / Preppers / Camping / OneBag / Travel
Not trying to out myself, but I don’t see my Country / Region / City here yet.
Wouldn’t mind some health, lifestyle, and research science.
Can we get AskHistorians on here??
I miss some of those, too. OneBag exists, but it won’t be useful till people start to really participate.

If you go up top to Magazines you can search by keyword, which is how I found these.
There are currently some duplicate communities across instances; over time people will settle into one or the other. You can subscribe to any of them, or just the most active one.
AskHistorians will likely need to have a dedicated instance (for verification) and more robust mod tooling than currently exists. It may be a while.
I think the biggest problem I have is that the magazines exist but have little to no activity.
I and a few other posted in /m/motorcycles but I don’t think there’s been any activity since.
Yeah very true, I think the main reason for this is the ratio of lurkers to contributors has always been so high. So until mags start getting more subscribers things might stay that way.
Although, I’ve found there was no InternetIsBeautiful mag so I went ahead and made it and have started to post on it when I can, attempting to drive some traffic to it and start some discussions at the very least.
I think we’ll need to be the change we want to see and just start posting and commenting as much as possible!
Since Lemmy and Kbin are federating now, maybe you’ll find something in line with what you’re looking for, like maybe https://lemmy.world/c/motorcycles would work for you. :)
Edit: As per notation, !motorcycles@lemmy.world or @motorcycles@lemmy.world should be better formatting.
Interesting, that community doesn’t show anything when I browse to it from kbin.
What I’m doing is clicking the magazines button at the top of the kbin page and searching for motorcycles. I see kbin.social/m/motorcycles which is where I’ve posted and commented. At the end of the search list I see the lemmy.world/c/motorcycles community, but it shows no activity and only 1 subscriber. When I click on it, I get a message saying “The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.”
When I click the link to browse more, it takes me to the actual lemmy.world page where there is a bit of content and I can see that there are roughly 250 subscribers.
Maybe I’m not understanding how federation works, because I was under the impression that I was supposed to be able to interact with communities from lemmy.world (or other federated instances) from within kbin.social. I must be missing something and I consider myself somewhat technical so I imagine this is extra confusing for someone non-technical.
Things have been hit and miss for the last day or so in terms of viewing other communities on other instances. You may find that in a few hours it’s showing posts when browsing from kbin, I’m seeing other ones that were empty now starting to show posts and comments.
It works from kbin if you remove the exclamation mark https://kbin.social/m/motorcycles@lemmy.world. Still a bit glitchy and it’s not fully populated since the first visit from kbin was only 2 hours ago.
I would prefer if you use the format of @motorcycles@lemmy.world. I wish there was a way to do links like that universally
Sorry, I’m very new to Lemmy and I was also posting from a mobile app so I just pulled the community. I’m not fully versed on the difference between how kbin communities name their short name versus Lemmy and I was pretty sure the ! didn’t work but I didn’t know it was @
I’ll store that away for the next time.
Discoverability is lacking atm. But I’m linking people to subs they seem to be looking for, and helping find the places people are looking for will eventually lead to better and better engagement.
Certain magazines/communities are already very active, and finding good threads, if not specific ones, hasn’t been hard.
But a lot of them have only just been started, so even with the users on, they havent been found and subbed to, yet.
I kind of miss DIWHY, always some good nonsense on there.
Combatfootage, NCD, gundeals, and liberalgunowners.
