fuck it, I’m saying it, cops are consistently worse human beings than the average criminal and I’d sooner trust my life with the latter
Fun fact: The event that coined the term Stockholm Syndrome was because the robbers went out of their way to try not to kill any hostages (after all, adding a murder to their charges makes them much worse), while the police were being trigger happy, so of course the hostages felt safer around the criminals than the cops.
Fucking LMAO what
Nils Bejerot, a Swedish criminologist and psychiatrist invented the term after the Stockholm police asked him for assistance with analyzing the victims’ reactions to the 1973 bank robbery and their status as hostages. As the idea of brainwashing was not a new concept, Bejerot, speaking on “a news cast after the captives’ release” described the hostages’ reactions as a result of being brainwashed by their captors. He called it Norrmalmstorgssyndromet (after Norrmalmstorg Square where the attempted robbery took place), meaning “the Norrmalmstorg syndrome”; it later became known outside Sweden as Stockholm syndrome. It was originally defined by psychiatrist Frank Ochberg to aid the management of hostage situations.
According to accounts by Kristin Enmark, one of the hostages, the police however was acting incompetently, with little care for the hostages’ safety, which forced the hostages to negotiate for their life and release with the robbers on their own. In the process the hostages saw the robbers behaving more rationally than police negotiators and therefore developed a deep distrust towards the latter. Enmark had criticized Bejerot specifically for endangering their lives by behaving aggressively and agitating the captors. She had criticized the police for pointing guns at the convicts while the hostages were in the line of fire and she had told news outlets that one of the captors tried to protect the hostages from being caught in the crossfire. She was also critical of prime minister Olof Palme, as she had negotiated with the captors for freedom, but the prime minister told her that she would have to content herself to die at her post rather than give in to the captors’ demands. Ultimately, Enmark explained she was more afraid of the police whose attitude seemed to be a much larger, direct threat to her life than the robbers.

Wonder why she fuckin thought that
prime minister told her that she would have to content herself to die at her post
There was no cognitive distortion whatsoever. The hostages were actually acting completely rationally, doing whatever they can to survive.
one of the greatest injustices of the modern surveillance state besides the physical harm wrought by it is an inability to express the unyielding fucking rage towards these fucking lower-than-filth scumbags even through text without the tickling fear of having your name jotted down somewhere, no matter how anonymous you think you are
This is exactly why all of us around during the bush admin were fuckin pissed about the patriot act. I had multiple fuckin death threats leveled at me for not being “patriotic” enough for deigning to question it after 9/11. And we’re the same ones who were fuckin pissed at Obama for continuing to support it when it was up for renewal. And we were the ones beating our heads against the “i don’t care, I have nothing to hide” and “anyone listening to my conversations will be very bored lolol” walls because fuckheads didn’t listen during the Snowden revelations.
There have been multiple studies that people subconsciously AND consciously change their behavior when presented with THE POSSIBILITY that their communications are being monitored.
Here we are, after every single one of those decisions went against us. And now we’ve gone WAY beyond privatized surveillance to the point that it’s a GIVEN that we are under constant surveillance. It’s fucked
“Your Honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.” ― Eugene V. Debs
The pigs have become way too bold. If I were a member of that woman’s family, that would be guaranteed
Relevant details:
She was in a crosswalk
He was doing triple the speed limit
His lights and siren were off
Wow, the guy who said this isn’t even the guy that killed the lady by going 74 in a 25 without a continuous siren, it’s some random other police officer that was at the scene to figure out if that murderer was fucking high.
That poor woman’s dad is much classier than I would’ve been, from the article: “The family has nothing to say,” he said Monday. “Except I wonder if these men’s daughters or granddaughters have value. A life is a life.”
