I had a great year for Romaine lettuce. After learning how nutritious it is, I started a bunch of seeds and they did really well. We had more than we could eat, and after a camping trip I came home to find they’d bolted (see picture). I recommend trying this plant if you have any interest. They are reportedly water intensive but I didn’t find them excessively so. I was also told they will bolt at the first sign of heat but that didn’t happen for me either. They were mature and harvestable for weeks, even with some hot days.

How much sunlight do they need? I have a relatively humid back yard which gets maybe 2 hours sunlight a day. Enough?

I believe that will be too little for them, sadly, though you could always try it. They want more like 6 hours.

Wow. Very cool. I assume that is not very fun to eat. I will have to try planting romaine next year.

It tastes amazing. And I think it’s weird to even talk about the taste of lettuce, but it actually has flavor when it’s very fresh.

The other thing about being so fresh: you can cut it up for salads and keep the cut greens in a container for days before they wilt and brown. I was amazed that this worked but if you think about it a store lettuce has been sitting for a few days most likely….
