I have completed some draft Community Guidelines for the group. https://aussie.zone/post/53977

Hopefully they are ok - it feels a lot like writing an assigment and waiting for it to be marked :-)

Be excellent… ‘Nuff said. But seriously Raven, thanks for your work and of course to everyone else who got this kickstarted and rounded up the troops. It was heartwarming to see.

I think that all sounds very reasonable. My only quibble is that it should be affects and affecting Melbourne.

I will trust you on that and change it - that is one grammar thing I can never really get my head around, no matter how often it is explained!

Absolutely ignore this if it’s over-explained and you don’t care, but I thought it topical considering your username here, but do you know the RAVEN hack? I used to use it back when I taught ESL.

Remember: ‘affect’ verb. ‘Effect’ noun.

So when it’s the verb, the ‘action’ word of the sentence, it’s ‘affect’, like: ‘it really affected me’ And when it’s a noun in the sentence, it’s ‘effect’, like: ‘the after-effects were really bad’ or ‘the special effects in this movie are great’

So in your sentences: ‘things happening in and effecting Melbourne’ ‘Happening’ and ‘effecting’ are the verb forms here, so it should be ‘affecting’

‘…around things that effect Victoria’ Again, ‘effect’ is the verb here, so it should be ‘affect’ If it was something like ‘the effects of the flooding on rural Victoria’, then ‘effects’ is correct, because it’s a noun.

It’s funny how some grammar rules just won’t stay in your brain! I remember it as being: You affect the effect. You affect something is the action, the effect is the result.

Clarifying the gif part are you saying no gif or to write a description before adding one? I don’t usually do gif unless it’s a pm to a friend, but just trying to understand that part when I read it, due to it can affect some people with its nature

I believe it’s no gif unless you absolutely have to. Gifs could take a long time to load and it could be rather visually stimulating.

I feel like (though I’m not Raven so I could be wrong) that it’s more so adding alt text to an image. It’s helpful for those who are blind/hard of seeing, or even those with shitty Internet to describe the image/gif. I don’t think there is a way to pause moving images here on lemmy/aussie.zone which is disappointing, but I feel like keep gifs to a minimum.

I would recommend just linking it with an alt text accompanied for those who might not want to view it but still want to understand what you’re conveying.

Yeah that’s one of my other thoughts as well, what you wrote. But yeah link to gif is better than outright gif and you can post photos now so wondering if a description with photo should also be added for the vision impaired

Yes, exactly - @studchud did a good example in the pet thread https://aussie.zone/comment/152866

The animated gifs is a separate issue (I might reword that bit to make it clearer) and it is intended as a suggestion not a rule that has to be followed.

yeah I guess we have this new rule because now we can make images and what not appear in the thread, whereas before it’s all links

I’m pretty happy with everything here. I think that, my major concerns are just trolls and such. Since what I remember of the DT was a lot of really welcoming folks (even now here while I stopped being active in the DT it feels like this place is safe… a safe space as one would say), but when it came to posts on the subreddit at large there were just some horrible and mean people, especially when it came to threads about the current climate/the American culture war they’re trying to bring here.

Obviously, everyone has a right to their opinion, just as I do. But a lot of those would get ugly, luckily they’d be pretty downvoted quick. But other than that, it’s a pretty simple rule list that makes sense. And I’m sure you folks on the admin team will edit the rules with enough warning if something comes up!

Agreed. I remember the first time i was on the melbourne sub like 6 years ago and the users were evil, ive blocked them till this day. Only came back during lockdowns and found dt was a much more decent, totally diff kettle of fish

I mean most of the people in the sub were decent people. It’s just the trolls and such who feel embolden to say some choice words that concerned me, but they were downvoted pretty easily anyway.

It’s been suggested that the extra technological hurdles for accessing this site actually prevents that toxic culture and the people who promote it, from bothering to show up.

Yeah, that’s what I reckon too. Besides Lodion did mention that he was looking to (or already done it) add barriers to stop the trolls and dickheads.

Surprised by the lack of replies, but this looks fantastic! If I’m being honest, the additional wording makes it much clearer than the old sidebar. Thanks so much for your hard work getting everything set up!

Instead of doing anything constructive I have been reading about the Aboriginal stories about Raven (AKA Crow). Known as Waa to the Wurundjeri People. Waa was originally a white bird, who stole coals/fire from seven sisters who were keeping it to themselves. He either dropped some or ended up throwing it at other animals who were wanting to have some too, which is how fire came to be used by mankind. In the process Waa started a bushfire in which he was burned, which is how he became black.

There are several stories about crows I’ve heard from different nations. They usually count them among the cleverest and most mischievious of animals. I love thier stories.
