I’m looking for suggestions. I haven’t seen much classic anime so well-known and leader-known ones are all good.
gundam, akira, and patlabor
Movies:
- Angel’s Egg – an art film, very symbolism heavy but has enough plot to not be insufferably boring.
OVA:
- The Rose of Versaille – haven’t watched it but its about a female military commander in the French Revolution and the manga was written by a woman who was a member of the youth league of the Japanese Communist Party.
Also I definitely second The Legend of the Galactic Heroes though it can be kind of difficult to find ‘legitimately’ due to the music rights issues.
The Slayers series had some fun light-hearted movies. If you want to see a chibi mecha battle a big tiddy laughing mecha, Slayers Great is your movie.
Slayers is the fantasy anime for me. It’s a long shot, but with recent revivals of old shows, there might still be new adventures of the Lina Inverse gang 🙏
Slayers Revolution and Evolution R were fairly recent sequels and were quite nice.
Still, I’d be happy to see another return.
“Crystal Triangle.” Japanese Indiana Jones has to fight off the world’s governments and the cabal-of-Jews-that-control-everything to capture the 11th Commandment from God in his spaceship. So terrible it has to be seen to be believed, just stick around for God.
For a great lesser know Columbo-style mystery, “They Were Eleven.” The ten most intelligent and talented students from ten solar systems in a hyper-meritocratic galactic civilization have to solve who the mole is in their class (which contains an unheard of eleventh person) before graduating from the academy and assuming their role in space government.
I enjoyed “Giant Gorg” recently, like Scooby Doo meets Johnny Quest with a robot. Also, “Black Jack” is a classic.
My wife loves the “Five Star Stories” OVA and “Legend of the Galactic Heroes,” and “Record of Lodoss War,” thought the last two are probably pretty well known.
