I don’t have any particular headcanon but, if it counts, I do believe Sandal is tied to some ancient mysteries. However, unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think the writers ever meant for him to be important to the lore.

I think Sandal was a case of a joke character where they just thought it would be funny to have him kill a room full of ogres or speak a prophecy, and then they needed to figure out how he made sense.
