horrible
It was passed overwhelmingly in the legislature. So the legislature is going to override the veto, right?
Now that’s what I call @Civility@hexbear.net
Other-minded elected officials, in California and other states, could very well use this strategy to diminish the civil rights of vulnerable communities
See, I can’t use my power to protect you because that would set a bad example for the ghouls I have dinner with to use power to attack you. Oh, they’re already doing that? Have some thoughts and prayers.
This is also a good explanation of why they can’t raise the minimum wage. Most leftists fail to consider that someone might later lower the minimum wage.
This legislation would require a court, when determining the best interests of a child in a child custody or visitation proceeding, to consider, among other comprehensive factors, a parent’s affirmation of the child’s gender identity or gender expression.
Never mind all the other legislation in other states and nationally that has been used to restrict trans rights that has passed, Newsom is sure that courts will strike down all of those eventually.
A visual of his logic:
Court | Legislation | |
---|---|---|
Can provide human rights | ✅ | ❌ |
Can restrict human rights | ✅ | ✅ |
And if they don’t override his veto, he’s effectively correct, in California at least
Looked up threads about this on Reddit. Only found three threads on it. Nothing in /r/politics
- /r/transgender was going hard against it
- fucking /r/lgbt was justifying the action and saying its good because blah blah liberal bullshit.
- /r/california_politics used different reasoning but still justified it.
Had brunch with work colleagues (plenty “international” which means mostly anglosphere tech sphere aligned) and the majority defended his actions. Funnily they were all “allies” and the queers on the table were all against it. Which is kinda how it often is. The arguments were those of a “negative peace”, too.
Being an “ally” means absolutely nothing. I have 100% confidence in their total betrayal the second the wind shifts.
I understand your sentiment. I do believe that there are plenty of real allies who would have our backs (as some did show in the past already).
But those are mostly already active and their ally-ship is proven and the “title” isn’t something they claim, it is something proved and thereby given.
I presume they were defending the veto as “negative peace” but not using those words is what was meant. Like they didnt call it that, but they said things that JuneFall would describe that way.
Its pretty much what Newsom’s defense for the decision is.
There was actually a small thread with like 20 upvotes and no comments that I found there, so I assume it was more the libs there willfully ignoring a negative thing about the Blue Team. Wouldnt put it past the /r/poltiics mods to remove a thread if it got traction though and spin up some bullshit about it not being relevant or whatever.
Libs for the past few decades: Just vote harder guys! If we can get enough Democrats into congress so that Manchin and Sinema aren’t the deciding votes, then we’ll be able to do things like codify Roe V. Wade and guarantee some protections for trans people! Maybe we’ll even do that free healthcare thing you guys like so much
California with its Democratic governor and its Democratic fucking supermajority:
California with its Democratic governor and its Democratic fucking supermajority:
Even worse since he’s the sole reason why it didn’t get made into law.
Like literally everyone from a majority of the state population, the state senators, judges, and state representatives would’ve been fine with this bill, but it got vetoed’ because Gavin Newsom wants to run for President for ??? reasons and thinks that if he turns the bigotry dial that hayseeds in rural areas will like him more, when in reality either they don’t care or won’t like him because he looks like the California Liberal that a lot people don’t like.
Yeah this is weird. I am not defending Newsom at all, fuck him. But given the support this seemed to have and that Newsom hasn’t been terrible on trans rights, I just figured he would sign it. Even if you see it as a heel turn because he wants to run for president… it’s becoming clear that attacking trans people isn’t a winning strategy. I guess the only “rationale” I can see is that this ostensibly hits at “parents rights” which a large number of Americans are absolutely psychotic about.
