Entirely unsurprising. It’s such a dumb line the CCP pushes anyway. From any reasonable stance, the different Chinese languages are distinct languages. There is the same or even less mutual intelligibility between Mandarin and Cantonese than between English and German.

So they shouldn’t be allowed to say such a thing? Most countries get to decide what their official language is right?
