ActivityPub magic?
So you can tag Lemmy communities from Mastodon like @tech and it just makes a new thread on Lemmy?
My imagination is a bit small, so I’m not seeing the immediate utility of this. How do you vote/downvote? How do you subscribe to a community? Those interfaces aren’t present on Mastodon.
@bristle @tech It’s really cool that it’s possible :3 but I kinda wish there were a way to mute Lemmy communities from a Mastodon home timeline without muting the entire community (unless there is and I haven’t found it in poking around).
It is very nice being able to be on masto and have a list that just streams in any subscribed posts and comments though ^^
Edit: Also, subscribing to a community by way of Mastodon involves following the community tag. The downside to this is, as I mentioned, it appears in your Home timeline
@dipolecat @bristle @tech Poor phrasing on my part, but basically I want to be able to follow the community from Masto, but not have it appear in my Home timeline, only on the list I’ve made for Lemmy :3
@SabreMc @dipolecat @tech I think that may be a technical limitation, so the best you could do really is have a “True Follow” list and treat that as your home timeline. Federated servers can’t practically separate “Follow” from “Add to a list” since both intentions need to tell other servers you want to subscribe to an account. I could be wrong about that though.
@SabreMc So this is an upcoming Mastodon feature, I’m told when I asked earlier – they are apparently adding the ability to follow an account but hide it from your home feed, and only have it in a list. I want this feature too.
@dipolecat Can confirm favs count as upvotes – just tried it.
@TerrorBite @bristle @tech it seems that this only works when a masto user favs a lemmy user’s comment. When a masto user favs one of my comments in a Lemmy thread, my score doesn’t seem to change, and I found a comment from with score 2 (so at least one upvote) which I didn’t receive a fav for in my masto interface.
@dipolecat @bristle @tech that’s probably because the favourite only federates to the favourited user’s instance. There’s a bit of a disconnect between how Mastodon federates events and how Lemmy federates them. The design of Lemmy kinda requires more aggressive federation than that Mastodon requires.
I’m following the furry community on yiffit.net using my mastodon account, and I saw a post show up on my mastodon feed. So I opened up the thread in another tab, and I’ve been faving/unfaving the mastodon post… and the score on Lemmy goes up/down immediately. So yeah, it looks like faves from mastodon are translated into upvotes on Lemmy.
I’ve also seen likes on my PixelFed notifications come in from Kbin.social users on this post that I sent to Lemmy from there - I’m assuming those were upvotes on their end.
I’m now thinking that some of the upvotes on that thread are actually likes and shares from mastodon. Edit: this might only be the case for new posts.
Interesting – on Mastodon, I can’t see the image that is embedded in your post. But of course, it shows up on pawb.social itself.
Likewise, I don’t think Lemmy will display media that is attached to a toot. For example, I’ve attached an image to this post. Can you see it?
@bristle @tech I think you nailed it, “the interfaces don’t exist yet”, we are presently(?) at the point where we can send email, I mean activity pub mentions, but not at a point where say Mastidon and client know how to cast an up vote back to a lemmy. just that, if we built those interface and interoperabilities, they would work in neutral way… like email!
