I saw your comment and went “ooh, does that mean that there’s a fountain pen community over here”, and I clicked on your profile excitedly, but I can only see posts/comments that you’ve made within the communities I’ve already joined.

How did you (re)discover the communities that you frequented? Did you just search for them one by one? I enjoyed how organic finding new communities on Reddit often felt and I’m hoping I’m just missing that now because I don’t understand Lemmy yet.

Re: the “vibrant community”

Yeah, it’s like the Nazi bar idea: that if you have a bar and there’s one Nazi, you need to kick them out and show zero tolerance, otherwise they’ll bring their Nazi friends and your regular patrons will leave and before long, you’ll be running a Nazi bar.

The thing is, kicking the Nazi out protects your space and your community, but it doesn’t stop them from finding another bar. There’s always a Nazi bar somewhere.

I feel like a lot of optimisations like this just may not have come up as a priority previously, because there hasn’t been much activity on Lemmy to require streamlining this stuff. At least, that’s what I hope; I’m crossing my fingers that once the Reddit hug server explosions have settled down, they’ll be able to start improving features like this, now there’s people here to use them.

Something I enjoyed is how, during the rise of /r/transcribersofreddit transcribing image content into a comment, because of their standardised formatting, people often assumed they were a bot, so would comment “Good bot”.

However, they were human posters, and this was often revealed by another bot that would look out for “good bot”/“bad bot” votes on (seemingly) human posts and say “are you sure [user] is a bot? Because I’m 97.84% sure they’re not”.

Eventually, it was common to see people replying to the image transcribers’ comments with “Good human.” and that always made me smile.

I don’t have any other suggestions, I just wanted to say that your comment is officially the nicest formatted comment I’ve seen on Lemmy thus far.

I know it’s just standard markdown stuff and it’s super common and will become more common on here as userbases build, I just enjoy the new platform mini milestones

Yeah, I’m seeing a lot of fragmentation in communities already. Maybe things will congeal into a few larger communities where necessary, but I think being able to share community content like that would be cool.

Or maybe if not following all the posts, ways of making it easier to cross post between communities. I enjoyed how crossposting worked on reddit, because I could read the comments of the crosspost, then zip on over to where it was originally posted to get a different take.

The Latin prefix cis- , meaning “on this side of”, which is the opposite of the prefix trans- . So a cisgender person is someone whose gender identity matches the sex assigned to them at birth - I.e. someone who is not transgender.

They’re value neutral words and are useful words to have. For example, if I wanted to make the point that not everyone who cares about trans rights or gender issues are transgender, I could point to myself, as a cisgender woman.

It’s okay for me to call myself cisgender, because I’ve reclaimed the slur <s>
