One of the reasons I love that Iā€™m in Germany rn. You donā€™t get people casually joking about Nazis then laughing it off like itā€™s nothing. It is literally against the law, and people treat that topic with actual respect.

I was uplifted for a minute and then I read the comments.

Guys, why is it so hard to just respect that people exist that you might not fully understand?

Chances are they just donā€™t talk about it

Theyā€™re just going to try to make one thatā€™s ever so slightly better, and then patent it again

And the volunteer community of content transcribers allied with the blind community, whoā€™s goal was to ultimately draw attention to the issue to improve accessibility on the reddit app. Go figure.

The term has been removed from most recent medical literature, because the use of it has been inseparably tied with mental disability. You canā€™t exactly justify calling a black man the n-word because he is a criminal, no?

Trying to find situations where itā€™s ā€œokayā€ to use slurs as insults is creating a loophole based on opinion that will broaden with time, implying that there are individuals who ā€œdeserveā€ to be called slurs and those who donā€™t. Itā€™s creating a divide that can be easily exploited. Itā€™s best just to find another word.

The only appropriate use I know of is when talking about flame retardants. The word inherently means ā€œto slow down/reduceā€, so using it to describe people inherently classifies them as ā€œslowā€, another common insult term for mentally disabled people. Using it towards fire is a direct use of its wording and doesnā€™t have the same risks.

Basically, the damage is done and the association is there, and it canā€™t really be removed simply because the slur is used ā€œaccuratelyā€, you know? It carries the harmful context with it.

My dad gave me his old Razer 2 since he doesnā€™t use it anymore. Itā€™s not in great condition, but it works
