Independent thinker valuing discussions grounded in reason, not emotions.

Open to reconsider my views in light of good-faith counter-arguments but also willing to defend what’s right, even when it’s unpopular. My goal is to engage in dialogue that seeks truth rather than scoring points.

Direct message

I’m not just saying that consciousness cannot be an illusion. I’m saying it’s the only thing that cannot be an illusion.

What is it with the constant cynicism even in the face of actual good news? This is absolutely a step in the right direction on Apple’s part.

You’re now ignoring the definition of consciousness stated in my open post. Dreams are happening in consciousness. An unconsciouss being by definition cannot have experiences. Not real or imagined (like dreams or drug induced ones) An example of true unconsciousness would be general anesthesia. You don’t even experience time passing. You hear the doctor counting backwards and then you’re all of a sudden waking up in a different room hours later. You don’t have any experience of the time in between.

I wouldn’t call a radar glitch an illusion necessarily. It’s more like an error or a false signal. I think of it kind of like tinnitus; you hear a sound that’s not really there but it’s not actually an illusion either.

Similar things can be experienced under the effects of certain drugs

The key word here is experience. The fact that you’re experiencing something means you’re consciouss. Consciousness is where experiences appear wether they’re real or imagined.

I’d give everyone a device that allows them to take photos of themselves and their lives, and then instantly post them online. Other people would be able to rate and comment on how well or badly they think someone is doing, based on these curated snapshots of their existence. In this experiment, people could also scroll through endless streams of these ‘highlights,’ constantly comparing their lives to others. To spice it up, I’d introduce a feature that allows people to see how many likes or comments other posts are getting, so they can feel great or miserable about themselves in real-time.

Most other people wont be reading it either so I don’t see an issue with pointing out the obvious misconception people could make based on the headline that talks about exploding batteries.

I probably have way lower criteria for blocking than most other people. I deliberately go to threads about Elon Musk for example and block everyone making snide remarks about him. Not because I’m a fan of Musk but because I’m not interested in dealing with people who use social media to talk shit. The people I have had the most insightful conversations with don’t post replies like that. My blocklist is way over 500 users long already and I add several people to it every day. I’m simply just trying to improve the signal to noise ratio.

Cars kill people every year. Trains and buses too. Ban those as well?

Large vehicles are inherently going to be more dangerous to pedestrians than cars. If you make a truck the size of a car then it no longer functions in the role it was intented for. Why is everyone so focused on trucks anyway? The nose height on most vans is compareable and on semi trucks it double the height of a pickup yet nobody seems to be complaining about those.
