IMHO a server would benefit from all updates… but as with all updates a pre-update backup is always wise.
Do you have specific issues to deal with?
I’ve done it for old scrappy machines in the past, but IMO it’s all down to how good the BIOS is…
Most should downrate to the slowest RAM speed… you might need to manually set the speed, but… it should work.
+1 Clonezilla all the way…
dd is fine if you want an exact bit-by-bit duplication of all the bits on the drive, but, that’s probably overkill.
Clonezilla (or, more accurately, the tools it runs) will only copy the useful stuff, boot sectors, partitions, files, etc… faster.
I used Arch ARM on a couple of Pi W, but support ended for them (fair enough), so had to move those over to Raspberry Pi OS to continue using them.
But, everything else is running Arch… Pi W2, Pi3, and they’re all solid.
