The Boost dev is also working on an app. https://lemmy.world/c/boostforlemmy
IIRC they’re a totally private company and in one interview about the graphics card exit it honestly sounds like the founders/owners would rather go out of business than tarnish their reputation even by selling to someone else. So yeah it’s possible they’re just winding the whole thing down.
It gets slightly annoying when you want to use a non-recommended extension (like RES). You either need to swap to Nightly or something like Fennec (on F-Droid). Then you must curate your own collection of extensions on addons.mozilla.org and finally set your browser to pull from that collection.
I could see a couple arguments. If the government argues it’s an income tax under the 16th amendment you could probably argue somewhat convincingly that it is not yet income.
As a direct tax under Article I Section 8 it would probably be doomed as it would need to be subject to the rule of apportionment – each state is required to be taxed equal to its percentage of the national population.
In order to survive you would either need to successfully argue that it is income or that it is an indirect tax (think excise taxes, customs duties, etc).
If this is available it definitely needs to be an option, and I think it probably needs to not be the default. I know I like to know which instances I’m interacting with, and I think it makes sense because that’s part of the point of the Fediverse.
