Pretty much all of these devices feature touchscreens now. I use the original Boox Nova Air and I think it’s great.

I’m not sure I understand your concern. If the alternative is getting an Android tablet or iPad then I agree that being locked in a previous version of the OS can be a disappointing experience, but the Boox devices are primarily e-readers which, since they run on Android, can also double as tablets for some tasks. When you compare it to the other e-ink alternatives, I’d say the Boox devices probably age the best, since even if the company drops support you can still find APKs around to make new uses. As for the basics - reading, taking notes, browsing occasionally - you’re already well suited, so no need to worry much about upgrades.

Mine is the original Nova Air and (as you can probably tell) I like it a lot. What other choices are you considering?

I’m sure the search function will improve as communities grow and the instances load each other’s content, but for now, http://browse.feddit.de has been my preference.

Love and hate, for sure.

As a kid it was the coolest thing ever, but the thing was a battery eating machine, so it was always a struggle to get my parents to buy a new set. Eventually they got me an A/C adapter which was… somewhat compatible. It fit, but shake it a little too much and POP, game reset. And of course that always happened after beating a tough boss. 20 years later I’m still annoyed.

I hope I can find mine tucked in some old drawer at my grandma’s and give it a well-deserved overhaul.

I’ve had similar issues, mostly with recently created communities on other instances and I couldn’t quite pin down the conditions causing it. You can include the @instanceurl suffix in the search and sometimes it helps, but the workaround that works best is to access the community you want directly manipulating the URL, so in your example http://lemmy.ml/c/whereisthisplace@lemmy.world

My workflow has been:

  • search browse.feddit.de to discover the most popular communities I’d like to join
  • type their URL in lemmy.world and subscribe

Well, Kernighan himself said “The most effective debugging tool is still careful thought, coupled with judiciously placed print statements.”

If it was good enough for him…
