He was in Madrid for five seasons where you lot won one league title with Zizou as the pièce de résistance of an insanely expensive project. For the record, when Zidane announced his retirement, this is what he said: ‘I don’t want to start a third year knowing I won’t be able to do better than I’ve done in the past. I don’t want another year like this one, or even the one two years ago… it’s been two years now that I haven’t been playing like I want to.’ Zidane was, in the bigger picture, a disappointment in Madrid. Even, and perhaps especially, to himself.
