From your other comments you seem to have a system simmilar to mine. I use mint, and i’m very happy with it, feature rich and ubuntu based, without the features you dislike like snap.
Only real step requirs for gaming has been installing some overclocking and heat management stuff like corecntrl, as well as some 32 bit archetecture stuff to run steam.
Roughly the same age as you with a pal round that age as well. I wouldn’t worry about, i certainly don’t, you’re both adults.
Governments of all stripes have been saying something along the lines of “we’ll get it done by halfway through the next decade” for decades, it’s only gonna happen when central belt politicians actually decide they give a shit.

I think they tried to do a lot of interesting things which ultimatly didn’t work.
