Accidentally created what tasted to me fairly close to Wychwood Brewery’s Hobgoblin. Called it HobbyGobby

edit: typo

Welcome! This is why I love homebrewing - there’s so many paths to explore that you never get bored unless you really want to.

I’ve limited knowledge on hop growing, I seem to recall however that some hop varieties may be under patent, so might be difficult to source for growing purposes.

I myself am quite partial to Simcoe since it has a relatively high alpha acid content so you’d use less for bittering than for example Saaz. I also like the flavour of Simcoe when people use it for aroma and dry hopping. I might be mistaken but I think it may have gone out of patent protection.

thanks for that! the reading material will help me further down the rice wine rabbit hole

what tasting notes are you getting on it?

don’t sell yourself short on the tasting vocabulary, everybody’s interpretation is subjective and there is no standard. I understood and managed to get a picture of the thing you’re describing, so purpose achieved :)

if you want to have some fun, try looking through some whisky tasting notes with such enticing flavours as ‘harbor rope’, ‘wet dog’ and ‘kippers’

There is less chance of flavour transfer from the stainless steel itself than from plastic, as long as you remove all residue between batches properly. Gaskets may hold some but that’s a different story.

I used starsan to sanitize a 30L stainless steel fermenter (a basic one, not conical, basically a huge pot with a lid and a tap - bought from Braumeister I believe) and the only issue I ran into was the plastic bits falling off the lid, though that may have been mechanical failure. I did however scratch it with a rough non-scratch sponge (as somebody else said in this thread).

I did have a glass 20L carboy shatter by itself only sitting in a midldy cold room.

Stupid question from a mead apprentice - why not just bottle as soon as it clears and then let it do its thing in the bottle?

RIP to the steam beer outside of Callifornia, too.

For holidays I usually aim to brew an imperial stout with maybe some whisky-soaked cacao nibs and walnuts around summertime so it has time to age until New Year’s. Should probably get to that soon…

Slightly hijacking this to say that if anybody feels like writing a post about mead making along the lines of the beer one, it would help populate that sidebar there yonder.

Stickied and added to the sidebar. Cheers!

I’d be curious to know if ads actually work as much as they are supposed to since they’re basically shoved down our throats. How many people have really gone and seen an ad and then said ‘that, I’m going to buy that’?

That’s what I wonder though, are those marketing teams really being effective or is it by coincidence that numbers go up on sales (maybe due to other factors like product quality or word of mouth - way more effective IMO than just forced ads; hell, ubiquity of things like coke could be a factor, too - and then just flooding the market is more effective than advertising) and then at the end of the year the marketing department just shows some progress it appropriates. Like firemen at a fire - them being there didn’t cause it.

Maybe if people believe something for long enough (in this case the effectiveness of plastering ads everywhere) they start seeing connections where there are none and start a whole field of study on this matter and drawing more non existant connections in an effort to self-preserve, conscious or not.

I may be living in a bubble trying to avoid ads and actively rebelling against them but I sort of refuse to believe that seeing somevody drink a coke in a commercial makes people go like ‘Hmm… that’s something I really want now’.
