One great feature I see no one talking about is that we can write our own text when posting links

Since I’m new here (fleeing from reddit), I’m not sure what precisely you mean in technical terms. How to use that feature? Or is it just that we can add text along the link, unrelated to any syntax?

We should try to make it a habit to write the main point(s) that the article is making to avoid misinformation and ragebait titles. Ideally, a post without any text backing the article would become a red flag that it’s posted by some bot or mass spammer, and would not be floated to the front page.

Yes, I consider this best practice.

It also makes it more accessible if the language is consistent. I remember when I learned the reddit-specific terms like sub, subreddit, redditor, OP and so on. They seem obvious in hindsight, but some of them were not when I had no idea. Now imagine for each term, there would be multiple synonyms. The feeling of “I have no firm understanding of what they are talking about” would last longer, which isn’t exactly a pleasant experience for newcomers.

Missing lots of groups.

Region/language specific: German, Hamburg

Topics: Climate, Gamedesign, ChatGPT, DebateReligion, DebateMeatEaters, AskScience

Someone posted https://kbin.social/m/fediverse/t/4331/The-growing-list-of-subreddits-going-to-be-dark-but which seems to suggest at least some of these already exist. But when I try to find/subscribe, I get “No results”. I’m trying to find new communities here, is this the right way? https://lemmy.click/search/q/search/type/Communities/sort/TopAll/listing_type/All/community_id/0/creator_id/0/page/1

the instance you are registered with decided to defederate with some instance

This might explain why I can’t find communities which allegedly exist, or why I can’t choose my home instance in the android app to log in.

It might. I’m not getting any error which clearly states the malfunction is due to defederation.

How does one achieve clarity? Is there a map, which shows which instance is (de)federated to which other instances?

Nice, thank you! There is only one defederated, the infamous lemmygrad.

Though I don’t think this explains the issues I have. Maybe it’s the overall load due to the reddit migration.

Thanks, that’s very kind!

Someone shared this link: https://kbin.social/m/fediverse/t/4331/The-growing-list-of-subreddits-going-to-be-dark-but

If I understand this correctly, that’s a list of communities I should be able to subscribe to. I can visit https://lemmy.ml/c/atheism and https://lemmy.ml/c/gamedev, but they open as a new (?) lemmy to which I am not logged in. When I try to find them via ‘Communities’, I get “No results”, so I cannot subscribe.

So it feels like some parts of the network are inaccessible (or even invisible, the internal serach does not show these two examples) and I don’t know why.

Good idea! Apparently most of my subs participated, so I only had to unsub a few times. Eerie view to see an empty front page after I was done, never had that.

Apart from this short visit, I stay away from reddit.

people in recovery from addiction and alcohol saying how they keep seeing ads for beer or gambling

Not that this is how it works, but I imagine a diligent algorithm looking at those individuals and that content, and then thinking “mhhmm this will generate maximum revenue!!”.

If you format the link like this: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/c/gamedev@lemmy.ml

I changed the link according to my home instance: https://lemmy.click/c/gamedev@lemmy.ml

Result: 404: couldnt_find_community

Same for https://lemmy.click/c/atheism@lemmy.ml

But https://lemmy.click/c/lemmy@lemmy.ml does work. I’m not subscribed/pending to any of these three.

This is consistent with the internal search (Communities). I can find and visit lemmy@lemmy.ml, but not the other two hosted at the same instance.

If you really want a space to talk freely about your concerns

They were brief, another user asked for a longer version. The user even intro’ed their comment with “my reticence to speak freely”, and then went ahead explaining since the other user seemed genuinely interested.

In a way this whole episode including your participation is very relevant to “avoid as the user base grows”. I also don’t think concern troll fits here, or maybe we use different definitions.

Personally, I wish people could get along with each other despite having different points of view. That’s one major, major value I see in platforms like this. I want to be exposed to views challenging my bubble.
