Hello! I’m Alex a.k.a. Ultra. I use NixOS (btw) and am a Reddit refugee.

I’m Gen Z, btw.

Even if I don’t mention this in the replies, thanks for taking the time to reply to my help posts, even if your solution isn’t quite right.

Direct message

“I’m doing my part!” is probably the most used meme on Lemmy

Probably, since it’s decentralised people can just move to another instance if the mods on theirs abuse their power.

They said that they’re keeping old reddit.

But they also told Christian Selig that the API won’t be changing anytime soon…

I’m not really “mourning” it, but I had a weird feeling, like the end of a great book (series) or movie, like I wish it would have continued more.

Hiwever after switching to lemmy, the community here seems way more active and friendly, and even though there are less overall users, I get more interaction with my posts and comments, maybe also because they aren’t drowned in a sea of other comments.

IMO the better thing to do would be to convert it into a Lemmy client. I heard someone is making a Lemmy API that works like reddit’s, so maybe it could use that when it’s ready?

Either way, I’m starting to work on my own Lemmy app written in React Native. If you have a name better than “ymmel” (reverse “lemmy”), please tell me.

I’m Gen Z and never got to experience the old internet, but I have seen old posts on stuff like Google Groups and mail lists. The fediverse has a similar vibe, and I like it

Better than every user from Reddit coming to Lemmy, for a few reasons:

  • servers would crash
  • the reddit “hivemind” would move to Lemmy
  • the shitty jokes would continue here
  • just check r/redditmoment, do you want that to become c/lemmymoment?
  • right now the community here is big enough that there are enough posts to keep us entertained, but small enough to get to interact multiple times with the same people and not get drowned in a sea of posts/comments
  • the Lemmy community rn is also formed of at least mildly tech-savvy people (that could figure out the whole instances thing), that isn’t the case for Reddit

It’s better to just improve Lemmy than keep going on Reddit. They keep doing more and more shitty anti-user things, for their IPO (initial public offering). This is probably just the beginning
