I’m just deaf and happy y’all’re seeing the light. My father was annoyed with mom’s captions. My wife used them before we met
My wife and I actually just finished the newest technology connections video. I watched it enough that she got interested in what her dork wife was enjoying. But yeah I really love the rise of captioned YouTube. TC is extra great because he’s been captioning his videos explicitly to be accessible for the deaf/hoh community because he cares about accessibility and I really just want more people to seriously consider that.
I have a whole ass rant about how people think of hearing aid users as all old folks and that hinders my ability to get flashy ones both for style and signaling purposes. But it also comes into play in contexts like this where content aimed at 20-30 somethings will historically just not bother accommodating us as much as stuff aimed at older people.
I’m the bitch who ordered anchovies
Yeah Digg didn’t die in a day. It takes time. I joined lemmy today, but I looked into it a few weeks ago first. It wasn’t worth the effort then, it is now. Having an Apollo-like app is a big help too.
Every previous major exodus had the problem that it was the people everyone was better off without leaving. Maybe you hated Reddit in 2015 and were pissed at their decisions, but the alternative was a place dedicated to mocking fat people and saying slurs.
Comparatively lemmy just kinda has a similar vibe to Reddit. Like I need to look for equivalents to some spaces I miss, but it’s not the people we said good riddance to
That actually makes me want to try mastodon. Queer, left wing, and tech nerdy is my kinda people
Yeah that’s where I am. Also its important to remember that the apps are nice but very beta, and what we have now are early adopters. Like part of why I’m here is that I oppose the increasing corporatization of the internet enough to sacrifice a better experience for it. We need the people who care but not that much so we can get the people who don’t care but think this is a better space.
It’s a long and slow process and if lemmy gains steam like we hope the real competition may start pushing centralized communities to quit their bullshit.
I was talking to my wife about me joining here and she pointed out that Lemmy really is the best use case for the fediverse. Forums were hard to centralize unlike Microblogging and other more social media-y social media. It’s less individual user dependent of a format
