The biggest middle-finger to him would be if really all “restive” subreddits agree on re-electing their respective mods.

This is the main reason why I won’t go scorched earth and delete my account there. If there are polls on this, I want to be part of it. All the people who cared enough about the blackout to leave and delete their accounts last week are dead to Steve, he can’t monetize them anymore.

Although that’s not to say the blackout has had no effect on me. I’m here now, after all, and will probably end up splitting my attention here even if Reddit rethinks things.

Now, that depends. Does the GPDR require a formal process to request to be deleted? They could claim that any activity that doesn’t come in through that formal process doesn’t count.

Sounds like all you EU Redditors that had your comments restored need to use that account deletion page.

I would have been willing to pay a bit in order to keep BaconReader. I am very cognizant that I am avoiding ads, and would pay to keep it that way. But I won’t pay an excessive amount.

Steve is not giving me the option. He wants to price the apps out of existence, because he sees them as competition. Which is weird, because the only purpose of those apps is to drive content to Reddit. And their users paid extra to the app developer because they prefer it. Does he not want my content?

There is a lot of doublespeak going on, if you pay attention. He keeps referring to 3rd party apps as “competitors” where they really are alternate paths to interact with the platform and provide the content he relies on to sell ads over. He keeps referring to the protesting mods as “not wanting to moderate” when really they are trying to make known how much they rely on third-party tools and how difficult he is making their volunteer job.

It’s like he’s forgotten why they started the site in the first place. I wonder what Aaron would have thought of all this?

Nice. I’ll make a note to check back on this in a few days to see whether they revert the edits.

Sigh, I guess the RemindMe bot isn’t here, is it?

Also they had a revenue sharing agreement that Reddit terminated in 2016 after Spez became CEO again?

That part is easy to understand, RIF licensed the Reddit name and logo and called itself “Reddit Is Fun”, then Reddit bought AlienBlue, made it their own app, and didn’t want to license the name to Reddit Is Fun anymore.

I noted right away they did the poll via upvoting, not via Reddit poll. This means that 3rd party apps could participate. Wonder if it has something to do with it.

I wonder how many Premium subscriptions they lost over this, and whether it’s material to their business at all. If so, it could put Steve in hot water. Between losing ad revenue and losing paying members, he seems to be making awful decisions if his goal is to be profitable.

At what point does Reddit’s board step in and make Steve go away? I know he is using Elon Musk as his spirit guide, but it’s a poor move to suck all the value out of your company before you sell it to investors…

The irony is that I was mentally prepared to have to pay for Premium to keep BaconReader. All they had to do was add an “API access” badge to that screen and none of this would have happened, plus they would have gotten a bunch more new sign-ups. I am at a loss to explain what Steve is thinking, nor why his decisions are better for profitability.

That exclusive avatar gear it probably NFT-based, so it can be traded independently of Reddit. (Alhough if you think navigating the Fediverse is hard, try navigating how to transfer and sell those NFTs on a marketplace).

There are certain subs where they have crypto-based community points, like r/cryptocurrency, based on participation. I have posted there, and have been give some of their token, which is inexplicably worth something.

Reddit’s foray into crypto has been interesting to watch, and puts me in the position that if I decide to leave Reddit for good, they have given me a severance package. I will be sure to sell every bit of it before leaving, except for one token , which I will carefully monitor to see what Reddit does with community points from deleted accounts.
