IPv6 can run on IPv4 and look how much that helped

This could also mean that they have found a (classical) vulnerability in one of the most used Post Quantum Encryption algorithms (such as Kyber) and they want everyone to switch to using it ASAP.

If this is impersonation (which it looks to be) shouldn’t it be removed?

Are you going to set the precedent that impersonation of figures in the open source community is allowed?

Personally I would be in favor of removing this post until OP can provide proof of identity (eg. by posting something on the main github account corroborating this post).

It’s pretty easy to check and see that this isn’t how it works. I checked both my instance and yours and both of them host the images that have been posted to communities on other instances, so clearly images are transferred (or cached) between instances.

Goodhart’s law is an adage often stated as, “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawk-Eye

The system was originally implemented in 2000 for television purposes in cricket.

Hawk-Eye has been used for the Challenge System since 2006 in tennis and Decision Review System in cricket since 2009. The system is also used to determine whether the ball has crossed the goal line in football as a means of goal-line technology, implemented in the 2013–14 Premier League season and now present at many domestic leagues and international competitions.

There’s something important missing from this article:

Eventually, that same USB drive is inserted into an air-gapped computer, allowing GoldenDealer to install GoldenHowl (a backdoor) and GoldenRobo (a file stealer) onto these isolated systems.

Why is an airgapped machine running executable code from a USB drive? Is there some OS-level vulnerability being exploited?

The original writeup says the following:

It is probable that this unknown component finds the last modified directory on the USB drive, hides it, and renames itself with the name of this directory, which is done by JackalWorm. We also believe that the component uses a folder icon, to entice the user to run it when the USB drive is inserted in an air-gapped system

So we have airgapped machines that rely on users to click icons in a graphical file manager to move data from USB drives. This is a complete failure of security procedure. If you have systems that need to be airgapped then you also need the corresponding procedures for use of those systems to prevent this kind of compromise.

This is not even close to singularity-level AI scaling.

The way that Nature is phrasing this is quite disingenuous because they make it sound like AI algorithms are designing the chips that the same AI algorithms are running on, which would logically lead to an exponential increase as predicted by Kurzweil and in science fiction.

AlphaChip (the AI model described in the paper) is only performing chip layout. This is the stage of chip design where you already have the chip design at a functional block level, and the layout algorithm must then decide where to place all of the elements on the silicon so that it can connect them all together correctly in the most efficient way (in terms of space used and connection lengths required).

Placement is important but it we have been using algorithms for placement and routing for decades (possibly since the very beginning of VLSI), so the only new thing here is that it’s a reinforcement learning model which is doing the placement instead of a human-constructed algorithm.

In order for us to reach a runaway singularity level of AI self-improvement, we first need an AI that can actually design the chips from the functional level. I have no doubt that Google are working on that but for now chip design, just like every other form of engineering design, is very much a human activity.

AlphaChip is just the beginning. We envision a future in which AI methods automate the entire chip design process, dramatically accelerating the design cycle and unlocking new frontiers in performance through superhuman algorithms and end-to-end co-optimization of hardware, software, and machine learning models

The poor phrasing of this article is just more AI hype, designed to appeal to the people who believe that the singularity is near.
