Half of my family eats meat. These meat substitutes are a way to get us all eating the same meal without anyone complaining. If we didn’t have these, then on the nights when someone wants to eat a burger, a sausage, a chili or a pasta dish, they’d be eating meat. So while there are still stubborn meat eaters in the household, these products help reduce our overall meat consumption by providing an easy option everyone will eat.

It has been that way for a while. Anything where you have to confirm you’re over 18 will not display unless you’re logged in.

The mobile browser experience in Lemmy is so much better than Reddit. I’m pleased there’s no need for an app, because it works fine in the browser.

I only just started with Lemmy, but the only thing I’ve noticed that needs improvement is discovering and subscribing to communities. This business of searching in a second browser window for communities from other instances and then copying the URL into your own instance’s search box is way too clunky. Lemmy needs a way for each instance to carry metadata about the other instances’ communities so you can subscribe to them just by searching for their names and pressing a button.

Finding and subscribing to communities on other instances is not slick enough. I hope it improves. It would be nice if people could discover and subscribe to communities without even having to think about which instance they are on.

Other than that, everything seems very straightforward.

I’d rather see someone make a PC with some kind of 486 or Pentium - the best hardware compatible with old DOS games and Windows 95/98. Even in 1994 I remember a 386 was too feeble to run Windows at a nice speed, or many games.

They asked how to discover good projects to work on. They didn’t say they didn’t know how GitHub works. I’ve been a developer for almost 20 years and, while I love open-source software, I don’t interact with many open-source projects on GitHub because my day job and my own projects take up a lot of time. I’ve made a couple of contributions but time has never permitted me to get too deeply involved. Anyway, it’s quite possible to be a decent, even experienced developer and not to be an regular contributor to the open-source scene.

I hadn’t heard of Soulseek before. I see it depends on some central servers though the file transfer is peer to peer. Do you need to take precautions with Soulseek as with Bittorrent to hide your IP address?

I use Spotify and Amazon Music for most things, with occasional excursions to Bandcamp and YouTube. If I really like something I’ll buy an LP or a download. Spotify gives good recommendations but it tends to lock you into things that are very much the same as what you’ve already been listening to, and after a while you realize your musical world has become very small. So sometimes I go to everynoise.com for a different way to navigate the Spotify catalogue, and hop around genres until I find something interesting, then back to Spotify to listen around. And I perform classical music so that helps with discovery, and if there’s a festival in town I’ll go and listen to random bands.
