It’s the entshitification of the internet which if you follow Doctorow you already know about. It seems to be spreading to non-web properties now too like obviously cars are trying to lock things behind subscription services.
I think there is a silver lining here and that is federated tech like this site is finally getting some attention as a real alternative to reddit/twitter/etc. Even better would be some real extreme trustbusting as a reaction from our governments but seeing as that would hurt their investments I’m not holding my breath.
All of this is great. As a long time migraine sufferer I knew a lot of this already from experience but there are some great new tidbits here too. I want to mention one thing that works VERY well for me in case it might help someone else. I never see this mentioned but this almost always stops it dead for me.
Buy yourself a caffeine-Acetaminophen-Aspirin migraine medicine, regular over the counter generic brand is fine. If you’ve had more than a few you know how it feels right when they are starting to come on. Take the aforementioned migraine tablets as soon as you notice this.
Note this is in addition to the other preventative measures above and not a replacement for them. I find if I manage my daily life to mitiage the triggers, the meds will almost always stop any other flareups. But if I let it get too far along before taking the tablets they are useless.
I think I’m about to hit the 15 year mark there. Still visit from time to time and probably will until the niche communities I like there are all replicated there but I’m already habituated to clicking Lemmy rather than Reddit when I’m bored.
I won’t miss it, it has already been a shell of its former self for years. The community is still fine but always getting more mainstream. The UI is horrendous though, especially on a desktop browser with all the mouseovers always getting in your way to show you some useless profile pic of a user or sub. Won’t miss that for a second.
Mouseovers that are easy to inadvertently activate and block a massive part of the site
