the farmer saying he treats the animals like family, which one might imply means he treats them well. but his family has to secretly run away from him due to abuse (insinuated by the wife quickly leaving with the kids). this mean he probably also abuses the animals, which is opposite of the implied meaning.

if it said something like “Farmer: i treat my family like my animals” then i would agree with your interpretation that his family now thinks they will be slaughtered. but it being flipped changes the meaning for me

thanks for the article. it seems that number only accounts for the heat released during energy generation at the power plant but there is also significant heat waste when it’s consumed. AC units, electric heaters, refrigerators, lightbulbs, pumps, basically all other machines. an individual unit might not produce that much but there are billions of them.

turbines are still energy generation, heat is also emitted when that produced electricity is consumed.

all machines have efficiency < 1 and therefore emit heat when used. many of those machines even have the goal of producing/moving heat.

but the Earth surface is not a closed system. Life, an incredibly organized machine risen from just photosynthesis or chemosynthesis, is an exceptional example of entropy locally decreasing because of external influx of energy from the Sun and the center of the Earth.

yeah, my understanding of this is the earth’s surface is generally at an energy equilibrium (combining sunlight, geothermal heat, dissipation to space, etc) which results in the current climate. adding energy to that system via heat changes that equilibrium.

Secondly, he justly warned about gathering energy from outer space and importing in on Earth, something that I had never considered. But what if we used this energy in outer space as well? This seems like a good motivation for space colonization. That’s a (probably foolish) dream that could be compatible with exponential growth beyond what is available on Earth.

wow this is an incredible idea! we could easily use all the energy we want in space or on another body that is less sensitive to heat (moon, mars, etc)

they may be able to read certain data from another instance but their current platform allows complete surveillance of what you looked at, how long, every click and scroll, etc while also being able to feed that in to manipulating what you see.

imo it will be basically impossible to have that kind of impact on people from instances not controlled by them, particularly if the other instance defederates so they don’t see meta instance content.

That said, I agree with @Dsaf@midwest.social that blocking by default would be against the open platform that we claim we want.

to me, this is very reminiscent of the paradox of tolerance. just because we want an open platform doesn’t mean we need to, or should, support those who do not have that same thing in mind.

i said this in a reply, but think it’s important enough so I’ll put it on its own too.

to me, this is very reminiscent of the paradox of tolerance. just because we want an open platform doesn’t mean we need to, or should, support those who do not have that same thing in mind. and allowing it is at the risk of allowing them to operate unencumbered and most likely take advantage of open stance.

this new meta product will undoubtedly go through the process of enshittification, just like all the others have, but we can sit back and continue to grow organically. those that care or get fed up will join, and that’s great.

i don’t think we need to be the next reddit, just a place that we all enjoy being. a place that is not driven by profit, unlike reddit, will surely be a fundamentally different place. striving to be reddit is doomed to fail.

i personally would be fine without meta’s content if it means we are more likely to survive.

i think the major reason social networks always seem to fail so far is that they are completely controlled by a company and can’t escape enshittification
