I joined Lemmy back in 2020 and have been using it as qaz@lemmy.ml until somewhere in 2023 when I switched to lemmy.world. I’m interested in Linux, FOSS, technology, and several other subjects.

There are several reasons for this:

  1. It’s low effort content that can drown out things people have put actual effort in (but that’s not really a problem here since 99% is low effort shitposts anyway)
  2. Its training material is gathered without permission of the authors.
  3. It’s wasteful in terms of energy and thus emissions

Sure, it’s worse than monero and cash in terms of privacy, but that’s not what it’s supposed to replace. There are plans to use Taler as an alternative to card payments in the EU and that would be a great improvement. Currently all payment data is visible to multiple of companies, the shop, the bank, and many middle man and is often sold off to other commerical entities. Taler would stop that.
