Just a guy biting off more than he can chew at every corner.

Direct message

I doubt it is getting fully saturated, not to say it’s not possible though. I can’t wait for our area to get High Split for symmetrical speeds. At the end of the day even if the router isn’t my issue, and I’m being saturated, I would like to move myself in a more secure and useable direction. Such as for home automation, additional servers and firewalls, and potentially getting into cyber security.

As for your planned homelab. On a birds eye level I would recommend using a small cheap computer with two network interfaces and opnSense as a router / firewall and Ubiquiti Unifi Access Points with the unifi controller software hosted on your media server. I can go into some more depth if you wish, but the official documentation for opnSense is pretty good.> This was basically gibberish to me, if you are willing for more details, I am more than happy to soak it in, and provide more questions following because that’s how it goes in the beginning right? lol

Thank you for your time as well. Reddit side was much less responsive than here. Judgy almost.

You had my curiosity, now you have my attention.

Hm if that’s what it’s for I may just stick to my subscription. Usually I go a self hosted route when I don’t want to pay for things, but in this instance I feel it may be worth it.

Wait wait wait. A Bitwarden server? Please elaborate on what this is and the benefits of it? I use Bitwarden for everything and if there’s a more secure route, sign me up!

Alright, that much I can do. I would love to learn in tandem. Just gimme some time to determine my hardware needs and gather.

Bad thing to say, I basically always have questions lol.

  1. Reviewing the Qotom, there are many options, for future proofing myself, how much storage space is really needed (let’s factor in I plan to continue building my homelab.

  2. For the WAP, is it possible to create a mesh system from more than one? There are only a few devices that I have “currently” that need to be hardwired but will obv. change in the future as I grow. (plus I’m sure the wife and guests will want wifi too gosh so neeedy

I’m definitely a big time noob because in that small post there are words I’ve never seen or heard lol.

First thing is I need to determine hardware necessities. I have a spare Ryzen 5 and like 32 gb of ram and a 2060 super (not sure it’s even necessary) laying around. It’ll be easy to scrounge up other parts.

I’m not sure I even care what he says at this point. The damage is done, his hand has been played, and we all know the type of person(s) he / they are and their end goal. Good riddance. I truly hope everyone comes this way, I can’t lie, Reddit was my go-to for information that I could rely on and get honest feedback from the “public at large”. The more I think about this the more I realize just how useful it was as a tool as much as it was for conversation.
