Right, I guess I think it sounds like kind of a tough call in my opinion 😅 Especially since it sounds like you have a pretty good setup at the that you’re happy with.
I think if I can try to be as unbiased as possible, here are the primary Pocket benefits as I personally see them:
- An amazing screen that offers both an extremely crisp and sharp modern display, and also an amazing throwback nostalgic display
- Ability to dock/undock at any time for couch play or mobile play (so essentially a better and more flexible GameCube Gameboy Player if you have one of those)
- Essentially a “mister lite” as there are tons of shared cores between the two devices
- In my opinion, a very good cost for what you get, which is basically a perfect Gameboy replica
I think for me, if these aspects don’t really pull much weight for you, it might make sense to cancel. It’s kind of an interesting sunk cost thing, where the longer you wait, in a way, it starts making less sense to cancel, as its arrival date should come closer and closer.
I hate to actively encourage others to spend money though so I don’t want to be too concrete in what I tell you.
Also if space is an issue, the Pocket has an incredibly light footprint, as it requires no shelf space really or even a wall outlet as it just charges with USB-C.
Let us know what you decide ☺️
Yes that is exactly right 😎 Well, that and it will also let you rip your carts yourself, so that you can make roms from your own collection if you want (but I personally haven’t tried this feature) Also you can easily roll back to default firmware if you decide you aren’t interested in the jailbreak. But, it is strictly a superset of features. Installing the jailbreak firmware does not remove anything from the console, so generally it is always worth using.
With reading cartridges? Or roms loaded in from the jailbreak firmware?
With old physical cartridges, generally it’s been recommended that if you’re having cartridge troubles, please use rubbing alcohol on your cart’s pins to clean them. Sometimes the analogue products seem to be a bit sensitive in regards to how clean the cartridges need to be. This video I think is pretty good for more info https://youtu.be/4Ej2Y2chPGo
The #1 rule is please don’t blow on the carts! 😅
Hello @Jakdracula 😊 Welcome!
So to answer your question quickly, yes! Analogue’s products are essentially “modernized” retro gaming consoles, with the primary features being true, native, 1080p HDMI output, original cartridge slots, and original controller ports.
However, unfortunately, with this good news, there is also bad news…
I am afraid to say that I think you could be a bit late to the party, depending on what retro gaming console(s) you are interested in. In a move that I and many others frankly don’t really understand, Analogue has sunset many of their flagship products:
- their NES clones, the Nt mini Noir and Nt mini, are no longer being produced
- their SNES clone, the Super Nt, is no longer being produced
- their Sega Genesis/Mega Drive clone, the Mega Sg, is no longer being produced
At this time, they have two consoles available for purchase/pre-order:
So unfortunately, if you are like myself, and many others, while the above two consoles are great, they’re really only just a piece of the big picture 😢 This leaves you with basically two choices, which would be to either buy the Analogue consoles you want from some seller on ebay or something, or you look into a MiSTer.
Fundamentally, the MiSTer is actually an extremely similar device, as it and the Analogue consoles are all based on FPGA technology, which is a type of hardware emulation. However, the look/feel/usability of the MiSTer is quite different.
I don’t want to tell you which one is better, as I think they are remarkably different devices, despite their similar underpinnings. But you’ll definitely find some opinions online if you go looking. As you might expect, some opinions may be more aggressive than others. I think each appeals to its own person, and it would be incorrect to say that one totally covers all of the bases of the other.
And of course, just to try to cover as much as I can here, you will find a more active Analogue community over on r/analogueinc.
Let me know if you have more questions? Hopefully I can help point you in the right direction.
Do you use Twitch? I’m interested in Firefox but twitch for me is pretty problematic, it seems to have a lot of issues with remaining connected to twitch chat.
Oh also twitch clips and twitch vods are both extremely broken in Firefox and have been that way for years 😓
Another big missing Firefox feature is the ability to just right click a page and translate. I use this all the time in chrome.
Also I really dislike how Firefox has this weird keyboard shortcut that I don’t think can be disabled: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1425650 it’s been a while since Ive looked around for this issue and it seems some people have a workaround so I should try that. But this bug is incredibly frustrating for me whenever I use Firefox.
