Is it? I would think it’s ‘a’, not ‘an’ because it’s “a you-are-el” (English is not my native language).

Yup, that’s correct. It doesn’t matter that it begins with a vowel, what matters is if it sounds like a vowel. Likewise, “an university” and “a hour” are both incorrect.

This is still salvageable by pronouncing it as “an earl”.

Well, I’m sure at least some person out there pronounces it that way, but I’ve certainly never met one!
