Was it successful? It’s always been kind of niche as far as I can tell. Most people have not seen it and those who have seen it appreciated it but generally only want to watch it once.
I remember the movie as being practically traumatizing the first time I watched it and then I didn’t watch it again for like two decades. I watched it again last year and was surprised that it’s not nearly as bad as I remembered it being. I guess movies have shifted so much in the traumatizing direction that Requiem for a Dream has been outmatched.
Or maybe I just remembered it well enough that it didn’t shock so much.
