Vegans don’t have pets?
I think vegans are incredibly unfairly maligned for simply doing what they feel is ethical, but participation in adoption is still having pets.
I think she means that they get their pets from rescues and shelters; versus breeders. Which btw, everyone should adopt from a rescue or shelter, and shun breeders. There should be more awareness raised about how many animals are put down because the shelters are over capacity. If you don’t feel you can commit to adopting, you can at least foster to help alleviate the over capacity. There are far too many people out there with animals they weren’t prepared for, and then try to surrender them.
I’ll add to some of the other comments here by saying that I think the term “pet” doesn’t quite capture the relationship that vegans would describe as ethical. “Pet” implies a sort of status that is lower than the rest of the family. Closer to some inert object that you can enjoy and put away when you’re bored.
I prefer to think of them as members of my family. They are family, not pets, not property.
Sorry what? So the innocents discarded by people and industries should just, what? get taken around the back and shot?
I’ll keep adopting greyhounds while pushing for the industry to be shutdown actually.
I agree, I’m a vegan with out pets and I think that all entrapment of animals is wrong. That said, there is only so much focus in the world and I don’t think a world with farm and factory animals is one that will abolish pets. Personally I really am actually afraid and dislike dogs and have been mauled by one as a kid.
