Soooo completely misunderstand my country’s existing economy and ecology, make a bunch of boneheaded decisions, then proceed to murder tens of millions with my dictatorship in the name of “modernization” while creating one of the most oppressive, least politically free governments in human history?

If you genuinely think that Mao’s land reforms resulted in too many deaths instead of not enough, I don’t know what to tell you.
We’re talking about landlords who were so abusive that the instant their tenants were free they each individually chose to murder them. Like it wasn’t a coordinated terror attack, it was millions of people all choosing to take extreme violence for likely the same reason.
Literally all the land reforms said was “release your slaves” so it’s not on anyone but the landlords for what happened next.
I mean a distaste for capitalism puts you in good company here but Mao’s China is one of the shittiest examples you could pick as an alternative, that’s one of the governments the right throws around as a stereotype for why they say communism is horrible and they do that with good reason.
