A self hosted email server for privacy while keeping thunderbird access

Otherwise protonmail is the way to go

Self hosting email is most often a nightmare, so many big companies block just because.

It is definitely a pain in the ass but I’ve haven’t had any companies as far as I know block my emails yet with my setup. The biggest thing is setting up your dns correctly to prevent your emails from going straight to spam

Good for you, I have simply given up. By setting up your DNS, do you mean the DKIM keys or something else?

I was about to write that the Protonmail bridge wasn’t that great with serious long standing issues. The main one I experienced myself was the subject line being different than the body for older mails, apparently caused by message UIDs not being stable (issue 220). They did fix that in February so I’ll have to check again.

Protonmail has a free plan with a inbox size limit that 99% of people will never hit. I’ve had it since 2019 and only 15% usage of my capacity

Not a lot of other good options if you don’t self host which is a bitch even for professionals nowadays

What I mean is that you need to pay in order to remove the impossibility of using an e-mail client.

disroot is a great option, but it’s recommended to use PGP for the best privacy

From privacy policy:

We use disk encryption on all servers to prevent data leak in case the servers are stolen, confiscated or in any way physically tampered with.

Other than that, I think they’re not encrypted, but they’re also working on Lacre, and they’ll most likely start testing it on disroot soon. https://disroot.org/en/blog/tag:lacre
