Female-fronted The Marvels is tracking to open in the $75 million to $80 million range in the latest test of box office superhero fatigue. It launches Nov. 10.

The 33rd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a sequel to the 2019 Brie Larson-starrer Captain Marvel, which opened to $153.4 million in North America, not adjusted for inflation. Tracking for The Marvels varies widely depending upon the research firm; NRG has it at $72 million to $88 million, while The Quorum thinks $80 million to $90 million.

There’s also ongoing concern about superhero fatigue. DC has been hit the hardest, highlighted by The Flash bombing this summer after opening to $55 million domestically.

LOL, while the public may be experiencing “superhero fatigue”, using a movie with a very problematic star may not be the best bellwether. Also, although the fact is misogynistic, all female leads in movies traditionally don’t do too well.

That said, I didn’t understand the bitching about the Captain Marvel. On the other hand I know I’m easily amused.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking about this upcoming one. You’re judging superhero fatigue by the most polemic superhero movies in the fandom: women-centric ones. Not to mention directed by a woman. So you lose any “anti-woke” fans, any sex-driven make fans that are hoping to snag some good gifs of the lead actress, not to mention everyone that just doesn’t give a shit about the sort of “side-story” marvel movies. There are a ton of factors going against this movie, superhero fatigue is just one.

Just so you know, women can perfectly direct great superhero movies.

Wonder Woman was a great movie, loved it, and it was well received grossing 4x its budget.

She Hulk, meanwhile, was revolting.

…my point was far from “women can’t direct.” I don’t have any interest in marvel movies, period. I was talking about the effect it has on the “typical” fan base, which is their bread and butter. I was pointing out what the movie had going against in in terms of appeal to the people it needed to appeal to.

Ms. Marvel is a Pakistani-American high school girl who is a fan of Captain Marvel. After wearing a family heirloom, she discovers she has superpowers, which she attributes to djinn.

At the end of the show, it’s revealed she is actually a mutant (X-Men) and the bangle she’s wearing activates her latent powers. In the last scene of the show, her bangle causes her to switch places with Captain Marvel, suggesting they are somehow linked.

Monica Rambeau is the daughter of Carol’s friend from the first Captain Marvel. She grew up and joined S.W.O.R.D., and became exposed to Wanda’s powers during the events of Wandavision, rewriting her cells and causing her to gain powers.

There, now you’re caught up.

Uh, what is S.W.O.R.D?

SWORD is basically the replacement for SHIELD. SHIELD focused mostly on homeland threats (main enemy: Hydra). SWORD focuses more on alien threats and has a different leadership.

So basically, SHIELD 2.0, except this one was founded by Maria Rambeau (from Captain Marvel.)
