It’s cope because it wrongly implies that the global north will be “sorta ok” other than some extreme weather events (most people don’t really fear these), and that the only consequence of this will be gunning down Brown people
The reality is that the mass migrations will be so huge, and from so many places, that it’s PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for Europe to defend against all of them.
North africa has 250M people. It is guaranteed to dry up
Southern Europe + Turkey has 150M people. Also guaranteed to dry up
pretend Equatorial Africa + Central Asia + India + the rest of the Mideast doesn’t even exist. Europe still has an INTERNAL REFUGEE CRISIS of 150M people coming from Spain and Turkey, and an external refugee wave of somewhere near 250M coming from Maghreb.
In 2021, US Border Patrol had only 1.6 MILLION encounters with illegal migrants from the Mexican border. And it still can’t catch all of these guys.
Now add the migrants from an African population of 1000 million, the rest of the Middle East (400 million), Central Asia (72 million), and India (1300 million). The majority of these people will be migrating in mostly northern directions.
Heatwaves are making life without AC impossible, those people will migrate first. Then they’ll make agriculture impossible, and even the middle class will start migrating.

It’s also just facts that the highly unpredictable nature of weather events is going to also impact the global north as well. The idea that large waves of people moving up north are going to be gunned down in some form of grotesque northern solidarity doesn’t really seem all that plausible to me when it’s more likely that the global north is going to be imploding from within due to climate upheaval as well.

I only saw the first 20 minutes or so of this empanada video, but it feels like Kurzgesagt is saying that only the people in developing countries will get fucked, so. you guys don’t have to worry. Showed a dead african elephant to highlight “some ecosystems” collapsing, and specifically used the word “developing countries” to explain what would happen when the temperature increases.
So it makes sense that they talked about the monetary/economic imapct and not the lost lives.
