North Koreaâs defence minister has warned the United States that the deployment of nuclear assets in South Korea could meet the conditions for its use of nuclear arms, according to state media.
Kang Sun Namâs comments, reported on Thursday by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), came in response to the US sending a submarine with nuclear-armed ballistic missiles to South Korea this week for the first time in decades.
âThe ever-increasing visibility of the deployment of the strategic nuclear submarine and other strategic assets may fall under the conditions of the use of nuclear weapons specified in the DPRK law,â Kang said in a statement, referring to his country by its official name, the Democratic Peopleâs Republic of Korea.
Tensions between the US and North Korea have been on the rise in recent weeks with Pyongyang increasing its ballistic missile testing in defiance of Washington and international sanctions.
Late last week, the US, South Korea and Japan released a joint statement condemning the launch of a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile days earlier.
âThe United States reiterated that its commitments to defend the ROK [Republic of Korea, or South Korea] and Japan are ironclad and backed by the full range of capabilities, including nuclear,â the statement said.
The three allies went on to hold a joint military drill on Sunday.
On Wednesday, South Korea and Japan reported that North Korea had launched two more ballistic missiles.
The US and South Korea also held their first so-called Nuclear Consultative Group meeting this week. The White House said it provided a chance for the US to reaffirm its commitment to provide âextended deterrenceâ to South Korea.
âAny nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its allies is unacceptable and will result in the end of that regime, and the US and ROK sides highlighted that any nuclear attack by the DPRK against the ROK will be met with a swift, overwhelming, and decisive response,â the White House said in a statement after the talks.
On Thursday, North Korea slammed the nuclear meeting. âThe phase of a military clash on the Korean Peninsula has surfaced as a dangerous reality,â the KCNA report said.
Do they need food aid again?
âThe United States reiterated that its commitments to defend the ROK [Republic of Korea, or South Korea] and Japan are ironclad and backed by the full range of capabilities, including nuclear,â the statement said.
nukes launched that close to China would mean WW3
At least we could all collectively stop worrying about the climate stuff, right?
When are we going stop fucking around with North Korea and just flat out stomp that dictatorship to dust?
Sick of the threats time to end the bullshit before they do just that and use a nuke.
The US tried that, it was called the Korean War. China got involved and it got messy. China still doesnât want a US ally on their border, so they would likely get involved again if conflict did resume. Given they have nuclear capability well beyond Norkâs, see how thatâs a problem?
When are we going stop fucking around with North Korea and just flat out stomp that dictatorship to dust?
Think this through. The population under the Kim regime is severely impoverished with few skills, little arable land, and nearly nonexistent health care for its population. It borders both China and Russia.
Youâre proposing we take out the Kim regime. Okay, lets say thatâs done. Now what? You broke the country with you deposing the leadership. Now youâre the leadership. Be prepared to take on 40-100 years of rebuilding an entire country where it doesnât have the resources to do that all the while boarding the other countries in the world in the top 3 of âmost number of nuclear weaponsâ.
Oh, donât forget to bring you wallet. Youâre going to be paying for ALL of it for 100 years in cashâŠor you can mostly ignore them and throw some bags of food at them to shut them up now and then. Which do you chose to do, World Leader?
