Hi gang and welcome to the third weekly improvement megathread!

I’m gonna copy the ideas for discussion from the previous threads but these are just my suggestions, feel free to discuss whatever you wish.

  • Do you want to share something you’ve done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
  • What would you like to do next week?
  • What aspect of life would you like to improve?
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, “sober for one day.” Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don’t have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

I’m wishing everybody a great week!

I quit smoking weed, done one full week as of today, which is the longest I’ve gone without it in maybe 2 years and the longest I’ve gone without it voluntarily for about 9 years.

Not that there’s anything wrong with smoking in the abstract, but I enjoy it too much to be responsible with it. So I’ve decided that I’m going to let it go so I can focus on things that matter more to me.

Also I’m continuing to play guitar most days after about a month since I picked it back up. I made a thread to get some advice and was overwhelmed by the nicest, coolest hexbears with just SO much advice and support. Very cool and very inspiring. This place can be really great.

Awesome dude! I’m proud of you! I’m having a blast with rocksmith, right now I’m learning power chords on Knights of Cydonia by Muse. If your guitar is electric, they still have brand new “real tone” cables for sale for $25 but I’m using my mic setup.

Thanks so much, man! Did my thread inspire you too, or just a coincidence?

I’m totally gonna get Rocksmith though, I’ve wanted to give it a try for like a decade at this point!

I learned of rocksmith from your thread, I’m the one who recommended the Mel Bay books. I had a nice little Taylor in my closet.

Let me know if you need any help configuring it. I had some problems at first, but I was able to use Ubisoft’s setup guide to fix it.

I’m tired boss. Goddamn I’m just fucking tired and I can’t even feel okay with that because I feel guilty knowing other people are even more worn out than me.

This week I practiced meditation for 4 days in a row and did a bit of reading. It was still too cold to go running or hiking but I went for a walk every day. Hopefully it’s gonna be a bit warmer next weekend so I’ll be able to go hiking.

What you reading?

Also, we should do a subscriber list like how the movie channel does

Great idea, I will start doing a roll call starting from next week.

I have recently started reading How Not to Die by Michael Greger. It’s packed with a lot of useful information on health and nutrition but at the same time it’s very easy to read. He’s using facts & logic to conclusively prove that the plant based diet is the healthiest diet. I think everybody should read it, this book will literally add years to your life.

I’m also reading The Hobbit, which is a really comfy book.

I hit the gym three times this week. I also downloaded Rocksmith 2014 from Fitgirl (guitar hero with an actual guitar playing actual notes) and played it twice.

Didn’t get around to practicing piano. The goal this week is to set a schedule where I’m practicing both daily.

Oh, and I tracked my meals for the second half of this week and met my calorie + protein + creatine goals for muscle gain.

Which songs are you playing on Rocksmith? Sounds cool

Knights of Cydonia by Muse, Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers, and pumped up kicks so far. I could actually perform ain’t no sunshine before too long. I’m playing the “lead guitar” path.

The cool part is that it can slow down parts of the song and then automatically speed up or increase the complexity once you nail a section. Great for beginners.

Self Improvement

!self_improvement@hexbear.net

Create post

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as “simple” as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving “productivity” (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like “grindset”. Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it’s precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don’t talk down to people.
