I have to do it for work and I’ve got no idea, there seem to be so many scammy looking sites

Haven’t done it since a very long time ago so probably there are better players out there now, but Gandi or GoDaddy maybe? I’d lookup their reviews (especially the negative ones) on Trustpilot to see all the gotchas.

I just used google, but you can use pretty much any big service (they are all priced similarly) if you are worried about scamminess. I also didn’t feel like being harassed for “website builders” or the other crap smaller providers try to sell.

Godaddy is the big one that I’ve heard of.

Disclaimer: I’ve never registered or managed a domain. I just remember their commercials from back in the day.

Network Solutions!? What a godawful company they were to deal with back in the day. Loved it when their monopoly over domain name registration was cancelled.

I’ve had domains stolen out from under me by GoDaddy. Fuck those guys! But seriously, I don’t blame you for not knowing.

Give me a 100 word summary of the controversies surrounding GoDaddy and its founder.

GPT-4: GoDaddy, a popular web hosting service, and its founder Bob Parsons have been involved in several controversies. Criticism often targets GoDaddy’s provocative advertising strategies, which some deem sexist. Parsons himself has faced backlash for his elephant hunting video in 2011, which many viewed as unethical and sparked a wave of customer boycotts. Additionally, GoDaddy’s initial support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in 2011 provoked outrage for potentially threatening internet freedom, leading to a significant customer exodus until the company reversed its position.
