As it turns out, your foot size can change over the course of your life. Who knew? If you’ve been wearing the same shoe size for years, it’s worth double-checking that they still fit properly so that you don’t screw up your feet and require months of recovery hahaha fml

  • When you have running or athletic shoes on, you should have about a thumb’s worth of space between your longest toe and the tip of the shoe
  • When you put all your weight on your foot, the upper part of the shoe shouldn’t bulge out on the sides. If it does, you need either a wider size or a size up
  • Your feet expand throughout the day, so that’s the best time to check
  • Your feet are slightly different sizes, so check both
  • You can add arch support with insoles if needed

Those are the basics, but there’s more info here: https://www.asics.com/nz/en-nz/mk/choosing-the-right-running-shoe/finding-the-right-fit

Also, if anyone needs some men’s 10.5 shoes, I have a bunch for you

Foot size changing over your lifetime aside, the inconsistency of shoe sizing is shit. I recently got a new pair, and I had to size down 2 full sizes for them to fit.

Shoes of the same brand and size will be inconsistent! It’s maddening!

Do any non-barefoot shoes fit properly? I suppose one’s feet do mold to the shoe, so eventually. I wear crocs.

It’s really hard to go back after barefoot / minimal shoe wear. Idk if my feet got bigger or if I just thought it was normal for my toes to be squished together inside my shoe.

Yeah. My feet, while very foot shaped, are not very shoe shaped.

nooooo my shoes don’t fit right, but they’re the only weatherproof footwear i own and they were a gift and fucking expensive (by my standards lmao). They’re perfect apart from the heels. i’ve worn through the heel of almost every pair of socks i own over the course of 4 months and my heels always hurt after i’ve worn them for more than like 20 minutes.

i’ve figured out that its because my heel is entirely leaving the floor of the shoe and coming back down with every step. but can i bothered to do anything?

also the cheap insoles i’ve found online seem to want to REPLACE the insole of the shoes rather than just go on top of it??? and god knows i’m not about to risk fucking up these fancy ass $100 boots

insoles are typically designed to come out (and be able to go back in) fairly easily, I’m assuming because of the number of people with orthotics. However you might just try heel lifts or half length inserts.

edit: also this kinda sounds like a lacing issue, try playing with some of these:

Yeah, learning about the heel lock/runner’s loop was eye-opening for me. It keeps these larger running shoes in place perfectly without affecting comfort or circulation. It looks like that’s the same technique for boots as well despite being higher up

I wish it was easier to size shoes online. Places I like to shop for shirts and pants and stuff can just list garment measurements, but shoesssssssssssss ugh
