Hello, Reddit refugee here…I’m still wondering how to use Lemmy well, because it’s not Reddit, but I keep on trying to use it like Reddit. So how do you use Lemmy well without being a lurker? And how are you unlearning your bad social media habits?

Thank you in advance

Well, first and foremost, break the barrier of lurking and start posting. I still have yet to do that because I feel like I don’t have a lot to post other than cute pics of my dog lol. Lemmy isn’t reddit so it’s not going to be as hostile. It’s still the internet though so expect a little pushback every now and then.

Comment more on posts and try to keep in mind that each comment is like having a real face-to-face conversation with other users. This community is pleasant and I feel very at peace interacting here compared to the other site. This is the first time I’m commenting so much on posts too and it’s been a blast!

I asked a question in one of the food threads(?) Forums(?) Lemmy instances(?) About ingredients about a type of food I can only get when I drive several hours away. I felt like it was received and answered without the memes and better-than-you tonality, which I felt was just nice and welcoming.

Cute animals are an easy start! Maybe asking for some food recommendations or even just posting something you’ve made. The possibilities are endless! It’s not a popularity contest anyway. People will see it and go ”hmmm” and maybe drop a comment. As long as you’re within the community and BeeHaw’s rules, you’ll be fine c:

This is key. Comment, interact, that’s contributing even if you’re not creating post.

search around for smaller niche communities that interest you, https://browse.feddit.de/ can help there.

copy those into your particular instance if they arent already there and subscribe, that gets the network connected so it works better for everyone else, then take part in the conversations, make posts, share it with others.

Surely you must have a favorite song / album / band, a favorite movie, an app, a hobby, expertise in some field, or just a good meme you saved on your phone? You are here, so it means you need and want connection. Just subscribe to as many communities that interest you (be sure to select All), and one of them will apeal to you more. Lemmy looks like is in its infant stages, and there are a lot of posts encouriging interaction, like “What are you currently working on”, “What’s your favorite X and why”, etc.
