far away from me but worth the trip. for just myself (since my partner works away from home for long stretches) I can drop $100 and have enough food for almost 2 weeks.

meanwhile the chain i work for is like 50-70 just for less then a dozen items

only big negative is how items just come and go. found a water flavor enhancer that was amazing and unique and once it was sold it never came back

I like Aldi, it’s usually a bit cheaper compared to the other shops and they’re usually a lot smaller and less crowded which is nice because I can actually go shopping at a normal time instead of having to wait as late as possible for the bigger stores to not be crowded so I don’t sensory overload and implode.

Aldi left Denmark last year, having been outcompeted by other chains, especially the Norwegian chain Rema 1000 who took over a lot of the stores.

They always had a bad reputation here as being the most lousy of the discounters. They had an image of being dirtier, more run-down and having worse products. That image was not completely deserved, they did have a lot of good stuff at reasonable prices. A lot of the bad image came from their business model of favouring their own generic brands, that often felt very German, which doesn’t appeal to the relatively conservative Danish consumers who prefers buying products they know.

Lidl is still here. They have a similar concept but they seem to have better luck adapting. Their stores feels nicer than Aldi’s and unlike Aldi who couldn’t keep up with the sale prices of their competition, Lidl is often as cheap or cheaper than their competitors.

Definitely seem to have the best prices of any place around where I live, we go there on payday to get enough groceries to get us through to the next payday

They have the most fruitful dumpsters, and also usually the best prices.
