However, I’m wondering if I should create a new account on programming.dev (or somewhere else) to be closer to where data science / data engineering conversations are happening.
Or maybe there’s a way to promote !dataengineering@lemm.ee to folks on other instances? (I didn’t create this one but I’m hoping it’s discovered by others soon)

Can you think of a good analogy to explain databases to complete beginners?
The ole ‘filing cabinet’ analogy is used a lot but I am looking for something fresh. The students will be epidemiologists / public health people that are very science literate but not necessarily tech-savvy.
“databases” is pretty broad - the literal meaning of the word is adequate and sufficient to describe what they are - just things made to store data. analogies may obscure the generality of the term…

that’s not how it works. you can and should follow communities from different instances (unless that instance is defederated by your home instance).
there are various threads serving kind of like list of new communities, but it is generally not neccesary, people interested in data science will sooner or later find the appropriate places.
Just subscribe to communities located on programming.dev from here. Then when someone else with similar interests searches from here they’ll see that community listed right away and can subscribe as well. You’ll see the same content as if you were registered on their instance.
As for promoting, I know over on hockey@lemmy.ca they have a stickied post listing out all the dedicated team communities and instructions on subscribing. I’ve seen similar posts elsewhere. You may find some other related communities and make a post sharing that dataengineering community to drive some traffic to it.
