Man, Cthulhu has lived in the murky depths of the ocean for TENS OF MILLIONS of years now, and people still comment on where itโ€™s from originally. /s

you think collective punishment is the way to go?

4 people from Cincinnati rob a bank, so everybody in Cincinnati should go to jail?

Hardly, itโ€™s a flippant comment about a fictional cosmic horror.

Yeah, that one rings a bit hollow, although I guess it could use it as an argument weโ€™re dumb, because weโ€™re doing it to ourselves. All the rest could theoretically apply, though.

โ€œcould, theoreticallyโ€, sure.

but in practice those condemnations are too broadly applied and donโ€™t reflect the constant struggle for progress or range of human success.

What an appropriate subject of conversation, because Iโ€™m pretty sure by the art style this is Existential Comics.

The use of โ€œin practiceโ€ suggests an absolute morality, which I think Lovecraft would object to, and I think many Lemmy users would as well. That aside, pretty much the only counter to this is that weโ€™ve toned down the war, slavery and brutal exploitation over the last 200 years. The last 10,000 before that and probably the last 200,000 before that are kind of the same thing happening over and over again. Whatโ€™s more, nobody can adequately explain why itโ€™s suddenly started to improve, or if it will stay that way. For all we know, we live in the turbulent transition period between agrarian hereditary autocracy and dystopian high-tech hereditary autocracy.

All in all, humanity is (morally) shit by humanityโ€™s own standards. By nihilistic or existential standards humanity is neutral, as is everything else. Cthulhuโ€™s standards are canonically beyond comprehension.

I like how this is illustrated, Cthulhu looks like a dude with a dad bod in a loose fitting wetsuit.

If weโ€™re going with Cthulhu Wars colors, the orange faction is the Sleeper, and their Great Old One is Tsathoggua. Iโ€™d like to quote a description from โ€œThe Tale of Satampra Zeiroโ€ for no particular reason :

He was very squat and pot-bellied, his head was more like a monstrous toad than a deity

Lovecraft Mythos - Cosmic Horror

!lovecraft_mythos@lemmy.world

Create post

H.P. Lovecraftโ€™s Cthulhu Mythos is a shared universe far larger and more terrifying than that of humanity, where ancient, malevolent beings known as the Great Old Ones slumber in the depths of space or time. After Lovecraftโ€™s death, the Mythos has been expanded and developed by many authors, including August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard. These and many other authors have helped to flesh out the Mythos into a rich and complex Dark Universe.

Rules:

  • Please NO โ€œCall of Cthulhu RPGโ€ content (there are other great groups)
  • PLEASE ONLY MYTHOS-INSPIRED CONTENTS
  • Share stories, books, authors and any other works from the mythos
  • Share reviews, analysis and theories on the lore
  • Share videos, images and contents inspired by the lore
  • Where possible share the link to the authors or the sources
  • Ignore the call in your dreams as long as possible
