Tried making some pure sugar mash last year and it turned out laughable. Thinking about trying my hand at potato mash. Does anyone have any recommendations for recipes or tips?
What was so laughable about it? I’ve made some pretty good sugar wash (for vodka/gin) that turned out pretty good. I use sugar and add Weetbix as something to help the yeast (as an alternative to the popular tomato paste). If you’re in America, I’d suggest using the lowest sugar wholegrain cereal you can find. Maybe special-K or all-bran if you have them?
I’ve heard that potatoes are more trouble than they’re worth, as they’re messy and you only end up with a 3-4% wash, so you need way more potatoes and time than you might think.
The YouTube creator Still It has a popular potato vodka video/recipe.
And then there’s his example of the TeddySad’s Fast Fermenting Vodka.
And also the sweet potato vodka example.
Also forgot the basic of basic I heard: 1 lb. of white sugar per gallon of water. Pitch bread yeast over the top and then let it sit for 6-8 days. Then do a stripping run and then a spirits run.
(Not a distiller myself; space, money, and licensing make that… impractical for the time being. Just enthusiastic)
not a pure sugar wash, but ujssm (See homedistiller.org) is dope. certainly easier than potatoes. also it’s dead cheap with minimal effort which allows you to have a lot of volume to dial in your cuts. also don’t use turbos (unless you got something like a large boka)
