Am I the only one to think it’s rather strange that you get redirected to csam.be when logging in to a Belgian government website using your electronic ID? Really, didn’t they bother to do a quick Google search to see what CSAM stands for?

I had honestly never heard the term until the recent issues on lemmy…always heard it called CP. I’m not even 100% sure I know what the acronym stands for either, just what it means from context.

I think this choice of acronym predates the widespread use of the CSAM acronym when referring to CP. I don’t know what it stands for either but I’ve always thought it was a play on words since in French, it sounds the same as “sesame” (sésame) which is the password to open the cave in Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and is used as an expression to designate an object that grant you access to something. But I have nothing to back this up.

Funny enough, in the Call of Duty games the reward coins are Call of Duty Points and are gold coins with CP on them. Makes me chuckle every time they pop up.

as far as i understand it, it means child sexual abuse material. a slightly more descriptive term, but it’s still child porn.

That’s what I gathered…I had just never seen it used until those weirdos started posting it here. Thankfully just saw the acronym, not any of the pictures… Unlike reddit where I was exposed to it on two separate occasions

“Porn” implies consent. Since children can’t consent, there’s no such thing as child porn, hence “child sexual abuse material”.

Wait, so ‘revenge porn’ implies it is consensual?

I do prefer the clearer CSAM that doesn’t imply porn being inherently bad, but pretty sure that porn implying consent is a newly promoted concept.

Pretty sure it’s a play on the word sesame, as in open sesame… and in belgium « csam » as the acronym for child material isn’t used a lot - check the google trends from the country and chances are it’s not relevant…

That may very well be the case. However, Belgium is just a small country in a very big world where the use of English is quite common. For instance, the European Commission launched a proposal last year on CSAM. One would think that would trigger a ‘Houston, we have a problem’-vibe somewhere…

Pretty sure the portal name existed before people started using this acronym instead of CP.

Yup exactly. And English isn’t the top language in good old Europe - especially since the Brits left…

The world does not center around english speakers, especially niche english terminology.

Yes, that’s quite jarring to be honest

Well obviously people should always take into account any future slang for CP when naming things to do now.
