I think Reddit doesn’t realize that what made their UI so appealing was precisely that it felt really functional and bare bones, like Craigslist still does or Google used to. As if it was designed by nerds who just wanted the most functional site. It makes it seem more trustworthy and neutral, less monetized.

This redesign looks painfully corporate.

That’s a good point. I’m a little concerned about their future finances given most of their money comes from google search being set to default.

Historically, the federal government played a huge role in housing. Even just talking about it more can give a sense of urgency, helping to change the culture of complacency, which is the least a leader can do. I think this is more lack of will than a lack of power.

“It is a free market. Canada is capitalism,” Yang added. “You cannot say, ‘Oh, because I do the shorter lease, (as a long-term renter) it affects you badly.’ You cannot do that.”

What an infuriatingly entitled thing to say. Yes we can say that. We can and should have stronger regulations around this stuff. We’re building all this new supply but it doesn’t matter one bit if it just goes on airbnb.

These houses are heavily subsidized by the lowest property taxes on the continent, and one of the lowest in the world. They can enjoy the increases in land value and not have to pay their fair share in taxes. Meanwhile, these same people fight tooth and nail to make it hard to increase density for others. I have little sympathy for them. They should downsize their home if they’re not using the space.

Great, but no one is proposing what you’re opposed to.

What I’m saying is that they’re able to hoard their huge homes all to themselves, without having renters, because we subsidize them to do so. They should be paying for the increase in land value with higher taxes. Instead they get to profit from increasing land value, deny other people a place to live, and, to top it off, not pay the fair price in taxes for all that unused space. Would correcting that be “forcing” them to quarter people? Obviously not.

No, I gave you a concrete example of how we can also change the perverse incentives. Your insistence that the most plausible alternative is “forced quartering” is ridiculous.

Also, stop using sock puppet accounts to upvote yourself and downvote me. There’s no way you posted a comment and someone instantly upvoted you 1 second later.

What don’t you understand? Homeowners now are financially incentivized to leave their homes empty. That doesn’t have to be the case. Literally no one except you is talking about “forced quartering”.

Serious question: do people on team fruit also call other “culinary vegetables” fruits, such as cucumbers, zucchini, corn, eggplants, bell peppers, green beans, etc.?

Wealth yes, but the age thing might be a myth. It turns out that people solidify their political leanings during major movements. The older generation just happen to be affected by Reaganism and Nixons southern strategy.

The most conservative leaning generation are not boomers or silver generation, but apparently Gen X.

Edit: I posted some sources in replies below.
