Billiam
This article from TechCrunch had a line that really confirmed some suspicions I’d had about this:
[Spez] told the publication that he was the person inside the company who was responsible for this policy change that affect these apps.
If you thought Reddit’s absolute refusal to do anything in light of all the bad press was borderline sociopathic, there you go. Spez is taking all of this personally.
Even the most hardcore capitalists have to realize that endless year-over-year growth is impossible.
The fact that they continue this cycle of “extract every last drop of money and then move on to the next big thing” shows they really don’t. They’re more than happy to wreck everything as long as they have enough cocaine to hold them over.
Not just that it was awful, Reddit was way fucking late to the game. The official app didn’t launch until what, 2016 or 2017? They were at least five years behind the 3PAs and like 10 years behind smartphone apps in general.
It’s a fair bet that most people who used 3PAs to access Reddit did so because they had been using it since before the official app and saw no reason to change.
“Hey Reddit, your unpaid employees are saying you said this thing, with screenshots and emails to back up their claims. Do you want to comment on this?”
“IT’S HEARSAY! UNSUBSTANTIATED! BASELESS! FAKE NEWS! ALTERNATIVE FACTS! WE’LL BE IN TOUCH TO MAKE CORRECTIONS IF ANY ARE NEEDED!”
“So are any corrections needed to this story?”
“…no.”
