Reporting for duty!
I think there will be much simpler and better alternatives to defederation in future, we just haven’t built them yet. I.e. ways to just achieve the targeted goal without the huge blast radius.
For example a community (or whole instance) might be set up so that only subscribers/locals can post and comment, and users from instances with open registration have to apply first before they are allowed to participate. Vice Versa an instance could have a default setting to hide communities from certain other instances, and let users customise that. I think that would address the main reasons beehaw defederated but without nearly as many downsides
Unless I’ve misunderstood something, community names are already globally unique and multiple identically named communities cannot exist, you’re just not looking at the full name.
Memes@lemmy.ml and Memes@sopuli.xyz are different names, for example.
Sometimes we ignore the part of the name after the @ if it’s unambiguous, but it’s still there.
Why would we need to defederate? Just don’t subscribe to their communities and you won’t see their content
Defederation is a horrible solution to that problem imo. It would mean no other user on this instance could see any of their content, just because you don’t like some of it. Worse, it cuts off all the users on that instance from all content on this instance. You’ll just create fragmentation and make things worse for everyone imo.
This problem only exists for you because you’re browsing All. The obvious solution is to just subscribe to the communities you’re interested in. There are plenty of good ways to discover communities and stay up to date on new ones without using All. All really means ALL content, that means there’s going to be stuff you don’t like, and that’s definitely not a good reason for defederation.
Long term I’m sure that a) as Lemmy grows, All will fill up with more mainstream stuff and you won’t see so much weird niche content, and b) there’ll be more advanced filtering/blocking tools so that you can do All but choose which instances to include/exclude
In my experience as someone with 0 degrees, 15ish years of exp, and having been on both sides of the hiring process:
- Degrees don’t really matter for hiring in tech, in fact personally I think X years working a real job in your chosen field (as long as you put some effort in to improving) is a lot more valuable than X years at even the best college.
- Everyone has imposter syndrome. It’s not just you, and having more degrees doesn’t make it go away!
Reopen it but make it NSFW so they can’t advertise, and only allow sexy pics of John Oliver (or some other take on that idea)
Only 2 monitors? :(
